Full-Time Hoops All Sophomore Team

Sophomore of the Year- Miles Norris, 6-9 200 PF, Mater Dei Catholic

Norris, widely held as a top-25 prospect nationally in the class of 2018, continued to grow as a leader of a very young - and very potent- Crusaders team. Norris' averages of 14.8 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3 blocks per game were all team highs for the 19-7 Crusaders, which went 8-0 in the Metro Mesa League en route to a No. 4 seed in the CIF Division 1 playoffs. The long, agile four man has developed a very nice array of post moves to go along with his potent face-up game. Norris edges out Taeshon Cherry of St. Augustine and Taurus Samuels of Vista for the POY honors.

All Full-Time Hoops Sophomore First Team

Taeshon Cherry- 6-8 205 F, St. Augustine- Cherry blossomed (no pun intended) during his sophomore campaign into one of the leaders of the Saints, averaging 12 points (50% FG), 6.5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks per game and providing toughness on the wing and interior for the Saints. Cherry's performances were against some of the top teams in the state, including his 14-point performance against Santa Margarita in the championship of the Eagles Holiday Classic, and he might have had the play of the year in San Diego after throwing down a massive dunk over Austin Beech in the Saints/Cathedral game at Point Loma Nazarene. While he projects as a wing at the next level, Cherry did most of his work for his high-school team in the post, and that versatility will pay off in the long haul.

Taurus Samuels- 5-11 160 PG, Vista- Samuels, known for his high IQ and court savvy, exploded during his sophomore year into one of the most potent offensive forces in the county. He leads all sophs with a 25 ppg average, but even more impressive is that he is doing it while shooting 49 percent from the field and averaging 5 assists per game. He saved his best performance of the season for the Panthers upset win over Parker, in which he scored 34 points and tallied 5 assists.

Warren Washington- 6-9 190 PF, Escondido- Washington, arguably the most improved prospect in the 2018 class over the past few years, continued his ascent this year, averaging 12 points and 7 rebounds per game for the Cougars. A long, wiry and versatile four man, Washington at times this year played point forward for Escondido, and became a very reliable playmaker with his passing. The scary thought? Washington, who was 5-10 as a 7th grader, doesn't look like he's done growing.

Jordan Starr- 6-7 190 WF, Foothills Christian- While not boasting the gaudy statistics of some of his peers, Starr played a very key role on the region's top-ranked team, and his well-rounded stat line bears this out: 5.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game. With Starr, a common theme with many of the forwards in this class is continued: versatility. His acute vision and court feel makes him an invaluable cog on a Knights team that has not lost to a San Diego team in two seasons. Expect a breakout year statistically to follow next year with the graduation of TJ Leaf.

Zach Reiter- 6-3 180 G, Poway- Reiter became the leader of a team that became one of the best stories in the region. Left as an afterthought after the graduating of its two leading scorers, Reiter emerged as the team's leading offensive threat at 16.1 points per game, and spearheaded the Titans unlikely push into the CIF Open Division Playoffs. Known primarily for his reckless abandon on forays to the basket, Reiter's game has evolved as he has become a reliable perimeter shooter, both off the catch and off the dribble.

Trey Anderson- 6-5 180 W, Mater Dei Catholic- The long, wiry wing type started the year off slow but ramped it up midseason, and emerged as the Crusaders' second leading scorer at 14.5 points per game. Anderson has the prototypical wing frame, and his game has continued to get better off the dribble. He is also an improved rebounder for the Crusaders at 6.1 boards per game.

Jalen Flanagan- 6-3 165 G, El Camino- The lockdown defender evolved into a very capable scorer at the combo guard, and had more than a few highlight-reel plays during his sophomore year. Flanagan, one of the younger 2018 prospects, made the All Avo-West second team while averaging 12 points per game, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals per game.

Robert Young- 6-1 160 G, Morse- After knee surgery threatened to derail his sophomore year, Young returned and looked like the player that many believed was one of the top prospects in the class. Young was the second-leading scorer for the 21-7 Tigers at 14.5 points per game, and has become an explosive playmaker off the dribble and an excellent complement to the Tigers leader, Justin Davis. Expect even more from Young as he enters his junior year.

J.C. Canahuate- 6-0 160 G, Army-Navy- Averaged 11.8 points per game on a loaded Warriors team

Rayquan Everett- 6-5 180 W, Lincoln- Versatile wing averaged 12.1 points and 6 rebounds for resurgent Hornets.

Demitri Washington- 6-6 200 PF, Santa Fe Christian- Wide post presence averaged 12.1 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks per game.

Deondre McHayle- 6-1 190 G, Monte Vista- Surprise Spring Valley guard averaged 14 points per game for Monarchs.

Phillip Willis- 6-2 140 G, Horizon- Second-leading scorer for Horizon at 11 points per game, knockdown shooter and improved lead guard.

Alex Cho- 6-2 190 G, La Jolla Country Day- Took a step back scoring (5.7 ppg), but invaluable guard on high-ranked Torreys team.

Nashom Carter- 5-10 150 PG, Point Loma- Pointers leading scorer has been a consistent performer all year.

Timmy Crawford- 5-10 150 PG, Montgomery- much like Samuels for Vista, blossommed into unquestioned leader for Aztecs during soph year (15.5 ppg)

Knox Winkler- 6-3 170 SG, Rancho Bernardo- Made big leaps as year progressed, averaged 9 points per game and was chief three-point threat for the Palomar league's second best team.
