Defensive Player of the Year Jayson Taylor headlines FTH All-Defensive Team

March 30, 2019

In this an era of high flyers, 6-10 Jayson Taylor doesn't play above the rim.

But opponents wouldn't know that.

La Jolla Country Day's starting center, blessed with a 7-0 wingspan and great shot-blocking timing and IQ, proved to be the interior defensive force the Torreys needed to make a run to the program's first state championship.

Taylor, who is headed to Tufts, averaged 10 rebounds and 4 blocked shots per game, and was huge for Country Day during their playoff run. Exhibit A, the Torreys CIF State regional semifinals win over Fairmont Prep: Taylor notched 12 points, but added 11 rebounds and 8 blocked shots and stifled the Huskies interior attack.

For this, Taylor is the Full-Time Hoops Defensive Player of the year and headlines the Full-Time Hoops All-Defensive Team.

All Defensive Team

Jordan Hilstock, 6-3 2019 G, Vista

The Avo East Player of the Year was also the league's top on-ball defender, capable of locking down the other team's top offensive threat every night.

Christian Rose, 6-6 2019 F, Bishop's

The most versatile defender in the counter, Rose's unique combination of length, lateral quickness and athleticism allowed him to guard 1-5 on the high school court.

Chase Pagon, 6-3 2019 G, Santa Fe Christian

Pagon night-in, night-out guarded the top players in the region's toughest league, with impressive results.

Derrick Carter-Hollinger, 6-5 2019 W, Foothills Christian

The linchpin of the Knights defense, Carter-Hollinger's ability to protect the paint at 6-5 took pressure off of the Knight's feisty guards.

Jay Norton, 6-1 2019 G, Mission Bay

The aggressive ball hawk is arguably one of the top 3 defensive guards in the county.

Roman Wright, 5-10 2019 PG, Rancho Bernardo

One of the few player capable of picking up speedy point guards full court the entire game.

Ronnie Latting, 6-7 2019 C, Mission Bay

A doorstop in the paint for the Bucs, Latting averaged nearly 12 rebounds per game while providing a stout position defender in the paint.

Chris Howell, 6-6 2021 PG, San Marcos

Capable of guarding all five positions for the Knights, Howell's length and versatility gave opponents fits all season.

Obinna Anyanwu, 6-7 2021 PF/C, Cathedral Catholic

One of the premier interior defenders in the region, Anyanwu doubled as a rim protector and one of the few bigs capable of picking up perimeter players on switches.

Kimo Ferrari, 6-0 2020 PG, Francis Parker

Feisty ball hawk frequently held opposing guards well under their season averages.

Jason Danso, 5-10 2019 PG, Rancho Buena Vista

Disruptive on-ball defender keyed the Longhorns effort on that end, picked up the ball fullcourt and racked up steals.

Ryan Brown, 6-2 2019 G, Torrey Pines

Took on the task of guarding the top perimeter player for the Falcons.
