Happy New Year! Holiday Tournament Season Standouts

A few weeks removed from San Diego's holiday tournament week, I figured now is as good a time as ever to give you my standouts from across the county at the tournaments I attended.

Best of the Best

Jake Hall, 6-4 2025 G, Carlsbad

Hall opened the holiday tournament week with a 43-point salvo in The Holiday Classic Tip-Off Night win over La Jolla Country Day, then continued his offensive tour de force leading the Lancers to a fourth place finish in the National Division. Hall is a "power guard" whose strength, pace, high release and excellent footwork on drives and on the block make him a tough cover for any defender, as he's able to over power smaller defenders, absorb contact and finish through wings, and use his footwork to confound bigger defenders on drives and in the paint. He also has rebounded shooting the ball from three in his senior year, shooting it with much more consistency and confidence than he did his junior year. Hall also does a solid job rebounding and is an underrated passer and playmaker (he reads double teams faster than just about anyone at the high school level and always makes the correct passing read). In the process, the UC San Diego signee notched his third-straight Holiday Classic All-Tournament team selection.

JJ Sanchez, 6-5 2025 F, Montgomery

Sanchez was ever steady in the Aztecs 4-1 weekend (Including a showcase win over Temecula Valley), leading the Aztecs to a fifth-place finish with wins over Windward, Riverside Poly and Georgetown Prep in the National Division. He is one of the rare high school players who doesn't have to score prolifically to dominate a game because of his ability to create for teammates when facing double and sometimes triple teams. Sanchez has excellent court vision and footwork, both of which allow him to dictate the pace of the game when he has the ball. A methodical scorer with a high release on his jump shot, he's able to get his shot off against bigger, longer defenders time and again. Defensively, he does a good job using his strength and understanding of angles to keep quicker defenders in front of him and to deny bigger defenders post position. His strong play culminated with him receiving a scholarship offer from Point Loma Nazarene, one of the nation's top Division 2 programs.
