Salute to Troy -- Troy Tominna headlines the All-FTH Freshman Team

Updated: Apr 8

On a preseason Top 10 roster dominated by upperclassmen, Troy Tominna came into Victory Christian knowing playing time wasn't a guarantee.

But an early-season injury to one of the Knights' top seniors gave the polished 6-1 scoring guard an opening into the rotation, and it was an opportunity that he would take full advantage of.

His numbers - 8.3 points per game, 3.4 rebounds per game, 1.1 assists per game and 1.2 steals per game - are not the most prolific we've seen, but his impact was significant, especially during the Knights sprint to the Division 1 title game, when Tominna emerged as a starter and boosted his statistical output (averaged 11 ppg, 5 rpg and 2 apg between Feb. 1 and the title game loss to St. Augustine).

It's for this reason that Troy Tominna is the Full-Time Hoops Freshman of the Year over some worthy competition, namely from Mater Dei Catholic forward Desmond Aniagyei, who became a primary option for the Crusaders following the departure of Davaughn Hueitt, and Coronado swingman Ah'Mahn Oliver, who was the Islanders' second leading scorer and helped lead them to a Division 3 semifinals appearance.

Here is the rest of the Full-Time Hoops All-Freshman Team.

First Team

Desmond Aniagyei, 6-7 F/C, Mater Dei Catholic

The athletic big became the focal point on the interior after the holiday break, and responded by averaging 10.3 ppg and 11.2 rpg after Jan. 1.

Ah’Mahn Oliver, 6-2 W, Coronado

The high-motor wing averaged 14.5 points, highest among D1-D4 freshmen in San Diego this year, and contributed 3.6 rpg and 2.2 spg as the Islanders spark plug.

Daxton Hyde, 6-3 W, Mission Hills

A full-time starter on the 19-11 D1 quarterfinalists, Hyde averaged 7.2 ppg and 4.8 rpg while often guarding the opponents best interior player.

Anthony Lee, 6-0 G, Christian

Another freshman who started from day 1 on a quality team (the Patriots were 21-6 and Eastern League Co-champions), Lee played the most minutes on the team and averaged 6 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals per contest.

Daesean Jenkins, 5-6 PG, Monte Vista

A dynamic playmaker and explosive athlete, Jenkins was arguably one of the biggest revelations of the entire season, averaging 11 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 1.8 assists per game en route to an All Grossmont Hills Second Team selection.

Andrew Mikhail, 5-8 G, Valhalla

Diminutive and crafty, Mikhail hit 77 threes as a freshman, averaging 12.8 points, 2.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game and making the All Grossmont Valley League 2nd Team.

Malekai Dillon, 6-1 G, West Hills

Narrowly missed the All Grossmont Valley League team after leading the Wolfpack in scoring (13.2 ppg) while also averaging 4.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists per contest, earning MVP of the Pacific Ridge Tournament and proving to be one of the most prolific shooters in East County.

Arthur Minton, 6-0 G, Kearny

The Komets' leading scorer averaged 14.1 points per game and was one of the City Conference's top shooters, earning All Central League 2nd team honors.

Isaiah Hill, 6-4 W, San Marcos -- Carved out a surprise reserve role for a deep Knights team, averaging nearly 3 points and two rebounds per game.

Kris Mayes, 5-9 G, Granite Hills -- A starter since Day 1 for the Division 4 semifinalist Eagles, Mayes averaged 4.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per contest and was a dogged on-ball defender.
